Why a knife grinder wrote setup software

OptiStack Pro is made by Maxwell Slitter Industries, a slitting line tooling manufacturer in Rajpura, Punjab, India. The company was founded in 1976 and has been grinding rotary slitter knives, spacers and separator discs, and shear blades, ever since.

Tooling is made and finished in house. Knives are hardened in the company's own vacuum furnace and inspected on a CMM, which matters here for a reason that is not marketing: it is the same measurement discipline the software assumes. A stack calculation is only as good as the thickness and bore figures it is fed, and a shop that measures its own tooling knows exactly how far a nominal number can be from a real one.

Where the software came from

Every slitting line runs the same arithmetic before every job. Coil width, slit pattern, knife thickness, which spacers are actually on the shelf, what the clearance should be for that material and gauge, and whether the pack that results fits inside the usable arbor length. Done by hand or in a spreadsheet, it is slow and it is checkable only by doing it twice.

Selling the tooling meant seeing the failures from the other end: packs that did not come out to width, knives chipped by clearance that was wrong for the grade, setups that only one person on the shift could build. Most of those are arithmetic problems wearing a tooling costume. OptiStack Pro exists to do that arithmetic against the stock a shop actually holds, and to refuse the job rather than print a pack the inventory cannot build.

Who runs it

Maxwell Slitter Industries is run by Shivin Gupta, who also owns OptiStack Pro. The technical guides on this site are published under his name because they come out of the tooling business rather than from a marketing desk.
