Slitting Line Setup: Every Knife and Spacer, Calculated

5 minutes 15 seconds · published 2026-09-06

What is in it

The long one. It starts with an empty account and ends with a printed setup sheet listing every piece that goes on both arbors, in the order it goes on.

Worth watching if you want to know what the software actually asks you for before you sign up, rather than what a feature list says it does.

Section by section

Your machine, once
Nothing runs until the line is described: usable arbor length, clamp reserve, the coil width and weight the line can take, and which knives physically fit the shaft. This is done once and not opened again.
Your tooling
Every knife and spacer you own, with a count against each. Five kinds of tool. Knife management is separate from inventory: inventory counts knives as a pool, knife management tracks them one at a time through rack, set and grinder batch, because knives wear.
The job
Coil width as measured rather than as ordered, the material, and the gauge off the coil tag. Clearance is calculated from those rather than typed, which is the point: it is the number people get wrong by habit.
The stack
The solver builds the pack from the spacers actually in stock and prints the assembly sheet. Where the inventory cannot make a pocket, it says so and lists what is missing instead of printing something unbuildable.

Do it on your own job

The slitting calculator works out pocket widths without an account. The trial builds the stack from the tooling you actually hold.
